This is a diorama about a mechanized german artillery battery deployed at a Russian izba.

The barn, which remains relatively undamaged, has been converted into a makeshift supply depot. Due to their perenial lack of equipment, a sig 33 infantry gun has been incorperated into the battery and put to good use! The Russians are trying to make a bridgehead with artillery support; The infantry gun, with its short range, is designated to engage the infantry. The wespe is acting in a counter-battery role.

The battery commander chose this position because his Wespes remain camoflauged by the sunflower field and his lower caliber guns can hide inside the barn. As you can see the dramatic difference in the guns' angles, they're about 5 KM deep in a quickly receeding salient and are resentful that they have to abandon such a nice spot in a few days.

Creation

The wespe is one of my first models. It was the first model I weathered, and appropriately applied decals (i think i did them backwards first). It used to be on my desk at work, but was requisitioned by a co-worker, as soon as I got it back, I devised a diorama that would make it the focal point. Kinda providing a home for a model that carries that legacy.

It started with a block of styrofoam, i cut into to produce smooth rolling elevation. I indentured the house into the styrofoam, the used some Plasiques styrene ground pattern for the building interior. I smoothed out the groundwork with Hydrocol. Sprinkled static grass quite liberally. Then I airbrushed the dio: dunkelgelb / olive green for grass; Rust for the house; flat earth / dunkelgelb for the dirt. Sand for the stucco and euro gray for the floor.

The roof that came with the Izba was ugly and boring. plus I would have to break it up, which would result in a very unrealistic spot. So I used balsa coffee stirrers
